5th Class Famine Village

We have been learning about the Great Irish Famine in our class over the past few weeks. We really enjoyed learning about such a significant period in our history. We decided to undertake a whole-class project and create a model of an Irish Famine village using recycled materials. Everyone had specific jobs:

  • Some made Cottier's houses - those who were very poor and worked for a farmer, but did not get wages.
  • Others made small farmers houses - those who rented land to farm from landlords.
  • One or two people worked together to make the Landlord's magnificent house, the depressing work house and the miserable soup kitchen.
  • Lots of children worked together to assemble the village and to make sure it all fit.
Take a look at some photographs of our work - The Famine Village and our plans. We hope you enjoy!

 "Bord Bród"
During Seachtain na Gaeilge, we made  a huge effort to speak Irish at home and at school. We also took this opportunity to think about all the things that make us proud to be Irish. We created a "Bord Bród" in our classroom and brought in objects which represented our love for our country. Some people brought in trophies and medals which showed their pride for our Irish sports and all the brilliant sports teams we have in our little country. Others brought in Irish musical instruments which they were proud of. Some other members of our class brought in books of Irish myths and legends and some people shared their love of our Irish language. Adam even brought in a sample of shamrock which represented our beautiful green scenery and the famous "forty shades of green"! It was fantastic for us to look at all the aspects of our  Irish culture and to really think about how proud we are to be Irish!
