Engineering in a Box

Fifth Class have been partaking in the ‘Engineering in a Box’ project this year in conjunction with the STEAM model.

Each Tuesday 2 engineers, Brook and Shane, from BAM in Kill have come into our classrooms and devoted their time and passion for engineering to inspire the children to create things in a variety of different areas such as:

·        Mechanical engineering

·        Biomedical engineering

·        Energy

·        Environmental engineering

·        Transport

·        Infrastructure

·        Food

The children made bridges from materials and even made a bridge made of children! They also built a sweet factory, pulleys and turbines, a car, a biomechanical arm and a water filtration system.

We even discovered Morse Code!

Each week groups would use the information that they learned to build the most structurally sound item they possibly could and the engineers were onsite to assist with every question.

For our final week, the children have designed an item of their choice, in their groups. This will be presented to the engineers next week to be judged!

We wish Brook and Shane all the best and thank them for their support and enthusiasm over the past months. We definitely have some budding engineers in the making in Scoil Bhríde!
